The ‘department’ Pyrénées-Orientales
With a gentle and sunny climate, the region is loved by people interested in its history, old stones or spectacular scenery, by sporting or walking enthusiasts, by tired city folk who dream of a walk along the seashore, or by the epicureans who love to indulge in good wine and food.
Catalan cuisine is characterised by the existence of a wide variety of produce which makes it a cooking-style standing apart from the rest.
Its identity rests on the use of contrasting flavours: sweet/savoury…sweet/sour…and on specific culinary techniques such as ‘sofregit’ and ‘picada’. The Catalan is a ‘llaminer’ , a confectioner, a connoisseur in the preparation of sweetened fine foods. He enjoys eating his ‘llaminadures’ (confectionaries) as much as making them! Ollada, bullinada, cargolada, boles de picolat, salpiquet de mongetes, botifarres, fuet, escalivats, crema catalana …just a few examples of the delights you can taste in our department !

<< The famous bay of Collioure
The Pyrenées-Orientales is a region of wines, including the Character wines such as Côtes du Roussillon reds, whites and rosés, or the ‘Festive wines’ Rivesaltes, Banyuls or Maury.
Make time to take the little roads alongside vineyards, to stop in the villages, to visit the wine-properties…the prestigious Château Valmy is just a short drive up around the lane from Mas Lamon !
If you are looking for calm and wellbeing, numerous villages offer spa therapy and treatments, benefits of spa waters or outdoor hot springs.
The Pyrenées-Orientales is the land of 2 rugby... (s) ; it is said that the Catalans have a heart "as big as that!". This heart is oval and its beat has a tendency to speed up when…. the rugby season starts! Over and above the sporting aspect, rugby is today a veritable social phenomenon in this area... whether it is to cheer on their clubs, which are USAP (XV) and the Catalan Dragons (XIII) , a veritable sea of “blood and gold” flags ripple around the stands at each match.
The Pyrenées-Orientales has a rich and diverse past; numerous sites and museums trace the history of this land, from the oldest European discovery of ancestral bones at Tautavel, the Romanesque art which is so present in Perpignan and throughout the numerous traditional villages of the area, the Cathare castles, the fortifications of Vauban which are listed as UNESCO world heritage... the list is endless…
